Architects Belfast Home Exterior Face Lift

Appearance is not everything. The most important thing is what’s going on behind. When trying to buy a house you will look at all aspects of it particularly the accommodation it provides by way of number of bedrooms, living areas, bathrooms attached to bedrooms, levels of equipment and appliances in the kitchen, is there a garage etc. etc. When you find the right house you may discover that the external appearance is not exactly what you imagine it would be. Some work can be carried to enhance the external appearance by either cosmetically with painting and planting or making a structural face lift – but be careful.

For example in recent years with the evolution of PVC materials such as windows many old timber sliding sash windows have been ripped out and replaced with these PVC type. Sure the plastic windows are draught proof, have double glazing, security etc but are considered boring and possess little or no character. This approach was probably the easiest way forward at the time to replace rotten useless window frames well beyond their natural life. However, in recent years with the latest in manufacturing techniques some manufacturers are now making the old style sliding sash windows again but with modern conveniences such as double glazing, draught proofing and the like. Many planning authorities are now insisting that sliding sash window types are replaced like for like especially in conservation areas in an effort to retain the original character.

This is important if for example you live in a terrace house, try to avoid standing out in a crown by altering the external appearance especially the front elevation of the house so much that it becomes an eye sore in the middle of the rest. It might be worthwhile suggesting to the neighbours to get together and redecorate for example as it would add distinction to the house individually and also collectively as a group. This principle can also be applied if you live in a semi detached house. A possible way of adding you’re individually especially if all the houses in the group are decorated in the same way is to paint each front door with a different colour.

On the other hand if your home has no special allegiance with a neighbouring property then you can do what you want subject to local authority approval. Architects Belfast when engaging with clients for architectural services would always advise that any alternations to the external elevations should be in keeping where possible with the character of the house intended by the original designer.
