Are Airsoft Guns Really Toys
Airsoft guns are not considered toys by most people, especially parents. After all, many parents forbid their children from owning an airsoft gun until they are much older. One of the reasons for this is there is still a strong association between airsoft products and BB guns, the latter of which are legitimately dangerous. When it comes to airsoft, the ammunition used consists of nearly harmless plastic pellets, and the only real danger from them is being hit in the eye. In any other area, it is virtually impossible for permanent damage to occur, unless an entire magazine was expended against someone at very close range. Otherwise, airsoft guns are remarkably safe, and you are more likely to get injured in a game of golf than an airsoft one.
From the standpoint of Federal law, it is certainly true that an airsoft gun is a toy. However, it is just on the line of what’s considered a toy, and there are extra regulations that apply to them that don’t apply to other things. Toy guns that do not fire any projectiles, or fire soft foam ones at a very low speed, can be purchased by just about anyone. To buy an airsoft gun, you need to be at least 18 years old, which makes a lot of sense. This ensures that there is an adult present in the transaction who has judged that the minor below 18 is sensible enough to use this product responsibly.
Like all toy replica guns, airsoft products must also have a bright orange tip. A common misconception is that it is illegal in all cases to paint over this, but you can as long as you never bring the gun out in public. This is because airsoft guns can very easily be mistaken for real guns, and you can imagine how many problems this could cause with the law, with consequences ranging as far from an arrest to an actual shooting.
