With its growing base of distinct models, the Ibanez RG series is easily the most used heavy metal guitar on the market and doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down anytime soon. The Ibanez RG350 is one of the current models in the class that is a top favorite among metal musicians right now and growing in popularity every day.
Ibanez has been making the RG since 1987 and it is based around the JEM guitar. The most common models have three pickups: 2 humbuckers and 1 single coil. The RG comes in mahogany, basswood and ash bodies and has three separate categories: Prestige, Tremolo and Fixed. Most come with Ibanez-made INF pickups but a few select models have EMG and DiMarzio electronics. The wizard neck is common to all with different styles of the wizard being exclusive to some models.
The Ibanez RG350 currently has four different model numbers in its lineup: the DX, EX, M and MDX. Each one is quite similar but have subtle feature differences such as color and fingerboards.
The 350DX is the white version of the guitar and has a pearl white pick guard and fine rosewood fretboard with white shark tooth inlays. The 350EX is the identical guitar but is black with all white pick guard instead.
For more of a economical version, the 350M has simple dot inlays on a maple fretboard and the body comes in blue or yellow. A step up from that model is the 350MDX with its all black body and pick guard, maple fingerboard and one striking difference: black shark tooth inlays. These are what really makes this model stand out in its appearance.
All of these models sound similar with the maple fretboard duo having a slight brightness increase to the naked ear (IMO). The MDX is my favorite for its striking contrast but I’m really sold on the RG350 model as a whole.
I’d put an RG up against any other metal monster out there today in terms of price, quality and tone. The RG350 is only one model out of many in the RG lineup so you really have many other options to choose from for price, tone and looks at the end of the day.
Among guitar players who are interest in both electric and acoustic guitars, the Ibanez brand is well-known. Born of Japanese descent, Ibanez belongs to the Hoshino Gakki company which is located in Nagoya. Think of Ibanez and what comes to mind is a very well-built high quality guitar that is suited to both the amateur player and the seasoned professional, and boasts a wide choice of custom signature models dictated by top pros like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. The heart of the business lies in the large variety of beginner and intermediate models.
Hoshino Gakki was a Japanese importer of a famous Spanish luthier and this is where the Ibanez name is derived. Considered by many to be the best of the era, these were very high quality guitars. This tradition has continued on into present day with the Ibanez acoustic guitars.
The Artwood series is the most traditional model designed. If you are looking for a sound that is uncompromised in natural purity, this is an excellent acoustic guitar. It is designed in the traditional style using classic toned woods such as rosewood for the sides and back, a top made of Engelmann spruce, a neck made of mahogany, all glossed to brilliant perfection.
If you are looking for a modern style, the Ambiance range will fit the bill nicely. An acoustic, electric guitar with Ibanez choice wood and the quality construction of the Artwood line, it also has an excellent pickup which is Fishman brand and can be used with an acoustic dedicated guitar amp and electric tuner on-board. You cannot beat this for both on-stage and at home use. Adding to the versatility of what you can plug into are the 1/4″ and XLR outputs. Quilted maple comprises the comfortable arched back of this model.
Whether you are just starting out or are a professional who has been playing many years, you will not be disappointed if you choose a classic Ibanez acoustic guitar that will always be of the highest quality.
