Finding Treasures at New England Auctions

I like watching shows on TV where people take some vase or painting they have found at an auction or yard sale to see whether it is worth anything or if it is a worthless cast-off from a bygone era. I must admit that I harbor faint dreams of finding some treasure for cheap and then selling it for a profit. So far I have not found anything that is worth loads of money, but I have found some items that are personal treasures for me even if they are not worth anything to anyone else. New England auctions help me to find items that will give my house a little character. I have a thing for old books. I don’t need rare first editions to make my collection special to me; I just need books with character. I like books from a time when people wanted to make every aspect of the book a work of art.

New England auctions are full of old books from America’s past. Some of these books I don’t really buy for the reading; some of them I just buy because they look cool. Ideally, I look for books that are both a fun read and have a lot of character. I have a shelf over my staircase where I keep these auction finds so that my children do not get a hold of them and mangle them. I really think that these books lend a little classic elegance to the staircase. I also like to find old traveling chests and suitcases. I look for luggage again that has both style and functionality. Surprisingly, one of my favorite finds is an old tool case. It looks like a very thin suitcase. The top does not lift completely off. Instead, about half of the top of the suitcase opens revealing a series of shelves, cubbies, and drawers.

There were a few tools in the case when I bought it like an old adjustable wrench, a measuring device, some screwdrivers, and a hammer. None of these tools were in good shape, but they were treasures in my mind. I have kept them in the old tool case. I have placed these old luggage boxes in a few different rooms throughout my house. Wherever they are, their rugged, distressed, traveled look tells stories about where they have been and inspire me to go places with my life. I will always love New England auctions for helping me to find these luggage boxes. Some of my favorite New England auctions to visit are New England estate auctions. You never know what you are going to find at an estate auction and that is why I love them.

Instead of going to an auction house and picking through what the auction house has deemed worthy of the auction, you get to pick through whatever is included from the estate in the auction. I am always on the look out for quirky old items, so estate auctions are a treasure trove for me. I have found old chairs, old dressers, old light fixtures–all sorts of items that have found their way into my home. I guess I am a fan of the whimsy and class of ages past. I really am not much of a fan of the hard, clean lines of modern styles. I like the function and luxury of the relics from bygone eras that you can find at auctions. Because of this attraction I have for the sort of odd cast offs you can find at an auction, I will continue to frequent New England auctions for as long as I can.
