The Long History Of A Comfortable Footwear – Sandals!
There is little doubt that the first shoe used by mankind was in the shape of a sandal. Though, we like to believe that the ancient Greeks were the first to have used them, their origin goes back to the Ice Age, 5,000,000 years ago, while rest of the mankind was wearing animal skins. The basic leather sandals patronized by our Stone Aged ancestors protected their feet of from sharp rocks and thorns.
Even the rock paintings of the Paleolithic period, 15,000 years ago, portray people wearing sandals. Well, those were perhaps the most basic sandals that couldn’t last long. Probably, the introduction of thong sandals by the Ancient Egyptians brought a radical change in the design of sandals. The materials they used for making their sandals included palm leaves, papyrus, rawhide and even wood. Soon thereafter, wooden sandals arrived in India and rice straw sandals appeared in China and Japan, while people of South America used sisal plant twine.
Sandals continue to remain popular till date and we have lots of different designs of sandals for men and women, the more often seen ones include hiking sandals, flip flops, polo sport sandals. But, now on looking back, one realizes than sandals didn’t make a fashion statement until the twentieth century. Perhaps the credit should go to the glamour of Hollywood, particularly for ladies’ sandals.
Modern footwear, such as Adidas sandals, are designed for almost any purpose, fashion included. Exercise sandals are riding the popularity charts, as are the “dress” sandals that can be worn even with the most formal evening gown. There are specially designed sandals for beaches, walking, hiking and comfort is the primary feature of them all. And, we do have sandals with great looks, though they apparently look quite uncomfortable to walk in! Shall we conclude then that the beauty of a sandal is a matter of personal taste of the wearer, irrespective of its comfort level?
